{"id":247,"date":"2021-11-22T17:50:21","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T17:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/procrastinomics.com\/?p=247"},"modified":"2025-01-14T20:07:47","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T20:07:47","slug":"supplyaggeddon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/procrastinomics.com\/?p=247","title":{"rendered":"Supplyaggeddon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tis the season for Christmastime again and that means shopping!\u00a0 If you are like me, the stress builds up to a peak on December 23<sup>rd<\/sup> at which point the shopping becomes urgent and important.\u00a0 Kids need gifts after all.\u00a0 This is what I call Urgency Creep and it&#8217;s a classic procrastenabler.\u00a0 Every day the urgency increases until panic attack.\u00a0 It\u2019s like the proverbial frog in the pot of water not noticing that the water is getting hotter. \u00a0Slowly, the heat builds.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not even Thanksgiving\u201d I\u2019m telling myself.\u00a0 I still have Halloween decorations up!\u00a0 Then it\u2019s December all of the sudden and the heat escalates \u2013 I\u2019m starting to think there might be a problem here.\u00a0 Then Little Christmas and another hot flash.\u00a0 Then the office and neighborhood holiday parties start.\u00a0 Still no presents come to mind \u2013 no presence of mind either.\u00a0 Now the room is starting to smell like frog noodle soup (tastes like chicken noodle soup).\u00a0 Add noodles at the last second until the timer goes off.\u00a0 How did it turn out?\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to tell because the kids are grateful for everything they get, including soup, and that\u2019s the best gift of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, in particular, is no year to procrastinate.\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t heard, there is a supplyaggeddon happening and things might get dicey.\u00a0 Black Friday is right around the corner and what happens when the shelves go dry?\u00a0 Mayhem!\u00a0 It won\u2019t be like some slow frog boil either; it will come fast and hard like a bacon grease fire.\u00a0 Lots of flash pop bang and possible scalding.\u00a0 But if you want that bacon, you reach for it anyway.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to have to tell your kids that it was a tough year and the bacon is a little burnt.\u00a0 It\u2019s best to avoid the grease fire, though, and find a different strategy like not procrastinating this year.\u00a0 It goes against my gut, but it seems like good advice for a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There might be a bright side to the supplyaggeddon.\u00a0 Just the other day, I noticed a new toy store in a strip mall by my house and a new small bookstore a couple of stores down.\u00a0 There used to be big and small toy stores around but first Wal-Mart then Target and now Amazon have all but destroyed the business model.\u00a0 Supply chain perturbations will increase the value of inventory held locally or domestically and push the pendulum back in the direction of store fronts.\u00a0 More companies will grow inventories locally and with it more jobs.\u00a0 With some luck, manufacturing would follow completing a reversal of the process that has eroded our global competitiveness over the last 30 years.\u00a0 We should start training the workforce now!
